The university was founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students and was later renamed Delaware State College in 1947 before finally being designated as a university in 1993.
DSU offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across five colleges, including the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, the College of Business, the College of Education, Health, and Public Policy, the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, and the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology.
The university has a diverse student body, with over 90% of its students being people of color.
DSU is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and competes in NCAA Division I sports, including football, basketball, and track and field.
The university’s mascot is the Hornet, and its school colors are red and blue.
DSU has a number of notable alumni, including retired NFL player John Taylor, former NBA player Clemon Johnson, and U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester.
The university is home to several research centers, including the Center for Research and Education in Optical Sciences and Applications, the Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research, and the Center for Integrated Biological and Environmental Research.
DSU is committed to sustainability and has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, including a campus-wide recycling program and a partnership with the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility.
