  1. George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university located in Fairfax, Virginia, USA. It was founded in 1957 as a branch of the University of Virginia and became an independent institution in 1972.
  2. GMU is named after American patriot and founding father George Mason, who was instrumental in drafting the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which served as a model for the United States Bill of Rights.
